The days a Latvia trip gets built around.
A morning in the Old Town, an afternoon among Art Nouveau facades, a bog boardwalk at Ķemeri, castles up the Gauja, and the long run south across the border. Pick the shape of your week.
The Hill of Crosses stands in Lithuania. Riga still runs the best day to it.
The hill sits outside Šiauliai, about four hours south of Riga, and it is the single biggest day trip this city sells. Operators pair it with Rundale Palace and Bauska Castle on the Latvian side, so the drive earns its length. Two more routes carry on to Vilnius, and a pair run north to Tallinn. Bring a passport habit even inside Schengen.
Riga rewards a slow first morning.
The Old Town is small enough to cross in fifteen minutes and dense enough to hold you all day: the Blackheads guild hall, three medieval houses in a row, a cathedral with a rooster on top. Walk it with someone who can tell you which facade is a 1990s rebuild.
Half an hour west of Riga, the ground turns to peat and pine.
The Great Ķemeri Bog boardwalk loops through black pools and stunted pines, and it is at its best before the mist lifts. Jūrmala is the next stop down the line: twenty kilometres of white sand, wooden villas in the trees, and a beach so shallow you can walk out a long way.

The full-day runs: the Gauja castles, Ķemeri and Jūrmala, small-group border trips.
Three things Latvia does that nowhere else quite does.
Old towns and forest parks are everywhere in the Baltics. A bitter black liqueur poured since 1752, a street of carved stone faces, and an Olympic bobsleigh track open to the public belong to this country.

Riga Black Balsam
A 45 percent herbal bitter in a squat clay bottle, made in Riga from linden blossom, wormwood, ginger and birch buds. Straight it tastes like medicine, which is roughly how it started. Locals cut it into blackcurrant juice, drop it in coffee, or warm it with honey when the wind comes off the river. Tastings usually pair it with a pub crawl through the Old Town cellars.

The Carved Faces
Riga holds more Art Nouveau than any other city in Europe, roughly a third of its centre, and most of it went up in a fifteen-year building boom before 1914. Alberta iela is the showpiece: Mikhail Eisenstein facades stacked with screaming masks, sphinxes and peacocks. Look up, and keep looking up. The best of it is above the second floor.

Sigulda in Winter
The Sigulda bobsleigh track was built for the Soviet team in 1986 and still hosts World Cup racing. Out of season you can ride it in a soft bob with a professional pilot at the front. Sixteen curves, a lot of noise, and it is over in under a minute. Husky teams run in the forest nearby once the snow settles.

Most of Riga can be booked the night before from a bar on Kaļķu iela. These cannot: they run on daylight, on snow, on a single morning departure, or on a studio that takes two people at a time.
- 012 countries! Hill of Crosses, Rundale Palace and Bauska castleA four-hour drive each way into Lithuania. There is one morning departure, and in winter it does not run every day.
- 02Husky Dog Sledding Tour From RigaThe teams run on snow. The season is short, the sleds are few, and a mild January cancels it outright.
- 03Latvia Bobsleigh and luge track ride experienceThe Sigulda track takes a handful of passengers per session and closes for race weeks.
- 04Glass Jewellery WorkshopStudio sessions run for one or two people at a bench. There is no walk-up slot.
Rain off the Baltic is horizontal. Go indoors and go deeper.
Latvian weather changes inside an hour and the autumn wind comes straight up the Daugava. The answers are all under a roof: a glass studio with a torch running, a market hall the size of five zeppelin hangars, a cellar bar with a bottle of balsam on the counter, an indoor range with ear defenders.
